We can’t believe it’s November already! Where has this year gone? With it being the month of November, we decided to focus on turkey in this month’s blog!
Who doesn’t love a delicious roasted or fried turkey on Thanksgiving? Having a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner goes way back to when the early American colonists in Plymouth dined with the Wampanoag Indians in 1621. They feasted on fowl and beef! Though they didn’t feast on Turkey during that time period, turkey came into play around the Civil War. Wild turkeys were in abundance in New England and at that time, they could weigh up to 60lbs which would feed a lot of folks! Turkeys had been popular eating in England which is how they came to be a favorite of the early colonists! After the Civil War, Thanksgiving was introduced into the school curriculum and by the early 20th century, magazines showed turkeys as the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner!
Here’s some fun turkey facts for you:
- Did you know that wild turkeys can fly but domesticated turkeys can’t?
- Turkeys can run up to 20 miles per hour.
- The turkey wattle is the long, loose piece of skin that hangs down on a turkey’s neck.
- Turkeys have been known to have over 20 distinct vocalisations!
- Turkeys are intelligent and can learn the exact details of land layout of an area over 1,000 acres in size!
