BUFFALO WINGS

Buffalo wings, those delicious, spicy meaty chicken wings that can come with all different sauces with the option of being fried or baked are one of America’s favorite snack foods.  A good bar & food establishment isn’t complete without a menu that offers Buffalo Wings with or without all different sauces.

Charlie's Kitchen Restaurant 10 Eliot Street Cambridge Ma

Where did the name Buffalo Wings come from?  Well it is believed that the first plate of wings was served in Buffalo, NY at a place called the Anchor Bar.  It has been told that a woman named Teressa Bellissimo served the wings with her own special sauce, blue cheese and celery because that’s all she had available.  Buffalo now celebrates Chicken Wing Day on July 29th every year!  Pretty cool if you’re a buffalo wing fan as you don’t want to miss it!

For many years, wings were only served in New York. By the mid-1980’s Buffalo wings had spread across the country.  There’s even a Wing Bowl in Philadelphia that draws crowds of over 20,000!

This festival is great fun and in just two days of the festival, it’s estimated that the attendees eat over 27 tons of Buffalo Wings!  Now that’s a lot of wings!

The first winner of the Wing Bowl at an amazing 444 wings in 26 minutes! Now that’s Buffalo Wing eating to the max!

Some Buffalo Wing Facts:

  1. Buffalo Wings started becoming popular after the Buffalo Bills appeared in four consecutive Super Bowls.
  2. The main ingredient used in the first pound of buffalo wings ever created was Frank’s Red Hot Sauce.
  3. The average amount of wings an adult consumes in one sitting is about 12 wings.
  4. Ranch dressing seems to be the more popular dressing to dip Buffalo Wings into.

Here at Charlie’s Kitchen we offer Buffalo Wings with or without Buffalo sauce. Either way, they are mighty tasty and one order of our Buffalo Wings and you’ll be coming back for more!

Pair your next order of wings with one of the many beers available at Charlie’s Kitchen and presto you have the best appetizer around town!  See you soon!

KARAOKE!

Image result for karaoke

We all know how fun karaoke can be!  Singing out your favorite songs with friends while a karaoke machine displays the lyrics and the music! Pretty much everyone has tried it at least once in their lives.

Where did karaoke originate?  Here’s some history on this Japanese pastime.  Karaoke is a blending of two Japanese words “Kara” meaning empty and “Oke” meaning orchestra.  The first karaoke machine was developed in the 1970’s!  It originally was a cassette player!

The karaoke machines started to appear in hotels and bar as a diversion to enhance drinking and socializing. It allowed people to have fun while socializing.   In the 1980’s, the karaoke box was created where people gathered in a small room with a karaoke machine and were served food and drinks.   In the late 1980’s, laser disc technology enhanced the karaoke experience with DVD’s that were the size of 12” records.  In the 1990’s the first karaoke machines were created that provided songs and videos.

Now, with technology being so advanced, karaoke can be done on phones and computers.  In Asia, karaoke boxes are still the most popular type of karaoke venue.  A karaoke box is rented by the half hour or hour providing a more personal feel with food and bar service.   In North America & Europe, there are karaoke bars, or restaurants and bars that provide karaoke equipment so that people can sing publicly.

Here are some karaoke facts for you:

  1. Karaoke was born in Japan when a band failed to show for a gig in a bar, the owner put on some music and asked his customers to come up and sing
  2. The Word Karaoke actually means “Empty Orchestra” in Japanese
  3. Karaoke is such a popular past time in Japan that business men often hire professional singers to coach them how to sing to impress clients
  4. The most popular song requested is “Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
  5. The Karaoke World Championships started in 2003
  6. The 2014 Karaoke World Championships were held in Stockholm
  7. Many Karaoke Champions go on to secure record deals with Adrian Kenny from Cork doing so in 2005 and went to support Jedward and Shane Ward in Concerts

Many places have weekly karaoke nights such as Charlie’s Kitchen where you can belt out your favorite songs every Tuesday night!  Come early have dinner and then get out there and have some fun singing with your friends!  Charlie’s Kitchen is the best venue in the Cambridge area to hang out  with friends and have a good time!

History of the Burger!

Charlie's Kitchen Restaurant 10 Eliot Street Cambridge MaWhere did burgers originate? The first misconception is that the hamburger was created in Hamburg, Germany.  The inspiration came from Hamburg as the German’s “hamburg steak” was made from chopped, seasoned beef molded into patties.  In actuality, the burger may have been created as early as the 4th century by the Romans.  The Romans served a baked patty consisting of beef mixed with pine kernels, black & green peppercorns and white wine!  We may not know where the burger originated but we can all agree that a burger is quite simply a delicious treat day or night!

The hamburger sandwich concept came later during the mid 19th century in the U.S.  The idea was to combine two slices of bread with beef in the middle and sell it as a “hamburger sandwich”.  Many Germans that immigrated to the U.S. opened restaurants in Chicago and New York in the 19th century and made a good living at it.  These restaurants often featured an Americanized version of the Hamburg steak, which was beef chopped and mixed with onions, pepper, salt and garlic, then grilled or fried and served on bread!  This is where the Hamburg, Germany’s link to America’s hamburger ends.  The difference is the bread and rolls!

In 1921 the first fast food hamburger restaurant opened.  Many had concerns over food safety and sanitary practices of the food industry. To alleviate the consumers fears, the restaurants were designed with stainless steel counters for easy clean up and the meat was ground in front of the customers, to ensure quality.  As time went on, the roadside diners started opening up and serving the hamburgers with soda pop, milk shakes and French fries!

Today’s Americanized hamburgers can be found all over the world in fast food establishments, casual and fine dining restaurants, roadside stands and in diners.

We all love a good burger and we think our burgers at Charlie’s Kitchen are absolutely the best around!

The Love of Beer Gardens!

In recent years, beer gardens have been returning to American cities and usually offer open spaces, table seating and bar seating, food menu and even live music.  They are a fun gathering spot for good conversation and beer!  Beer Gardens including the one at Charlie’s Kitchen can be open year round (weather permitting).   Today’s beer gardens in America are a bit fancier than the German beer gardens in the past.   You will find some with spectacular food and design innovations such as the fire lit tables at Charlie’s Kitchen.

Beer gardens in America first starting appearing in the 19th century and took after the German way of spending afternoons outside while spending time with family and friends and enjoying a brew or two!

Germany’s beer gardens started after brewing was banned during the summer months due to many brewery fires.  Breweries then started digging cellars near riverbanks to keep their beer cold until they needed it in the summer.  This also gave their lagers the perfect conditions to ferment properly.  It didn’t take long for tables and chairs to start showing up near these brewing locations along the rivers.  Thousands of people would gather together to sit outside, listen to music and enjoy the fresh brewed beer.

Tucked away in this eclectic area of Cambridge, the beer garden at Charlie’s Kitchen has something for everyone.  From 18 draught beers, a full menu and the popular fire top tables.  No need to stay away on a chilly fall evening, these fire top tables are awesome!

Charlie’s Redhouse Farm

It’s almost Summer and you know what that means, fresh vegetables!!

Fresh Veggies
Fresh Veggies

A few years ago, Charlie’s Kitchen owner, Paul Overgaag, purchased a farm and named it “Charlie’s Redhouse Farm”.  The farm is on 64 acres in Winchendon, MA that provides locally grown, organic vegetables to several restaurants.  Along with supplying restaurants with fresh produce, eggs and sometimes meat, the farm is also involved in local farmer’s markets.

Have you stopped by the vegetable stand at Charlie’s Kitchen and brought fresh vegetables home?  If so, then you’ve eaten the delicious goodness that came from the farm!

The farm has undergone some renovations since being purchased by Paul which include updating work facilities, new roofing on the barn, adding solar powered hot water and electricity, new irrigation systems and they added nine new greenhouses!  The green houses are helpful in prolonging the growing season. The farm has several cultivated fields, livestock, apple orchard and a large forest that supplies firewood to two restaurants.  The livestock are a big part of our farm and include, pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits, pheasants, hens and two horses.

The farm has a great relationship with the restaurants and they work together by having the farm supply the restaurants twice a week with fresh vegetables and the restaurants supply the farm with food scraps for the livestock, used vegetable friolater oil that fuels the farm’s vehicles and discarded oyster shells for the pathways around the farm.  This is a great way to reuse and recycle our renewable resources!
